Ozkonak Underground City, which is approximately 14 km away from Avanos, is located within the boundaries of Ozkonak town. The city was built by carving in an area where the granite-based tuff layer formed as a result of volcanic movements on the northern skirts of İdiş Mountain is even thicker than the other layers in the region.
Some parts of the underground city are open to visitors. Work continues for other locations.
Ozkonak Underground City
Underground cities are usually built according to an architectural plan to provide protection against possible attacks. The people of the period carved many holes on the tunnel, unlike other underground cities, after the large bayonet stone at the entrance and used as a door. The bayonet stones at the entrance of each corridor are built for security purposes so that they can only be opened and closed from the inside. Holes carved in the ceiling are built to pour hot oil on the enemies in case of possible attacks and to attack with spear-like attack tools.
